Meet James Tejada, an aspiring artist in Vancouver who is excited to be joining us this Fall to learn UI Design. Learn why James decided to enroll and how he plans to use his newfound skills post-graduation.

What is your education and career background? Your current role?

I’ve tried different things from Business Management all the way to Interior Design, I even tried to be an international dancer/choreographer. Currently, I am an aspiring artist working a full-time job at a dealership.

What course are you enrolled in for this cohort and what made you decide to take it?

The course I will be taking is called User Interface Design, I want to focus my interests in design towards a specific area in the technology industry, specifically UX/UI. I find myself deeply invested in the subject of what User Experience and User Interface offers and I strongly believe that this will be the career for me in the long run.

How did you hear about the program?

Luckily, I have a good friend that encouraged me to check out the array of design programs that BrainStation offers, which lead me to choose UI Design!

What are you most excited to learn?

I am excited to learn the ins and outs of the technology industry, the skills needed to work as a UI Designer. I have an idea of what UX/UI is, but I am sure I have all types of things to learn from it.

If you had to pick a favourite tech company doing awesome things – who would it be and why?

I am at a battle between Apple and LinkedIn, but if I had to choose between the two, I choose Apple. The staggering amount of evolution Apple has come to is amazing, and I feel they will stay on top for awhile, Apple is always prepared to take the consumeristic trends to another level, with newer products and out of this world ideologies on a quarterly basis. And I’m not just talking about their products, the company itself represents such a professional yet a fun workplace environment. I hope to work for them one day.

How do you plan on applying your newfound skills, personally and/or professionally?

Personally, I want to take my new found skills and apply them to my day to day life, collecting inspiration in every direction I look and ideally influence a shift in my point of view of everyday things. Professionally, I aim to apply these skills towards a lifelong career and to eventually work for a company that represents positivity, professionalism, growth, and opportunity.
