Each employee at Kik brings something different to the table and is key in helping the company grow and evolve. We thought it would be fun to do a ‘Day in the Life’ series to document the day-to-day of some of our employees here at Kik. This will shed light on how each person and team contributes in different ways while all working towards the same goal.

A Day in the Life at Kik: Social Media Manager, Shannon Gallico

I’m definitely a morning person and try to be out the door no later than 7:15am. I take the train downtown and most mornings I’ll walk around a little before heading into work. I find this is a great way to get creativity flowing - it also helps that the Kik NYC offices are in a great area for exploring!

When I first sit down at my desk I check my email, the news and chatter on our social channels. I also have a few go-to websites I check for trends in news and pop culture. If nothing huge happened over the weekend I look at Twitter to see if there are any trending topics to jump on, then review our weekly content calendar. Today #ThePerfectionists was trending on Twitter so I decided to check it out. I saw that it’s a spin-off of Pretty Little Liars that was JUST announced (something our audience would definitely be excited about). I decided to push general content for the day back on the calendar and create a post so Kik could be one of the first to share the news. Since we were one of the first to share, the post garnered almost 5x the engagement of our average tweets. Not bad for an organic post!

It’s Monday so my team and I had our weekly sync. Today we walked to a local coffee shop to touch base and prepare for the week ahead. Back at the office we’re preparing for Halloween and National Bullying Prevention Month. I’ve been working with our sr. program manager when it comes to deciding what type of content/partnerships to integrate into a social campaign. It’s important for us to showcase the awesome content we have on Kik in a creative and interesting way. I can’t give away too much just yet, but we’re planning some awesome campaigns in store!

One of the many perks of working here at Kik is free lunch. The Waterloo team in Canada has catered lunch and dinner each day. Here in NYC, the office is much smaller, so we get free lunch delivered to our office through Seamless or can choose from one of the many spots in the neighborhood. Today I was healthy and just got a boring ol’ salad. If you haven’t checked out Seamless, I highly recommend!

I’ve been revamping Kik’s social content strategy which will be rolling out for testing soon. In addition to creating templates and benchmarks for weekly and monthly reporting, I’m brainstorming types of content that will resonate with our users while educating on the product. I also have a meeting with the comms team so we could all touch base as we kick off a new week.

If I’m ever having a creative block, I like to take a step back from my desk and make myself a cup of tea (non-caffeinated this late in the day!). A quick break can make a world of difference during an afternoon lull.

I had previously conceptualized ideas for upcoming content. I jotted down notes, saved photos for inspiration and added these to my weekly content calendar. This afternoon I used this information to create custom social content for Kik in Photoshop and Sketch. In college I majored in graphic design so it’s always fun to get creative and make this type of content.

As the end of the day nears I follow up on emails, check social again and tie up any loose ends to prepare for the next day. I take a stroll down Canal Street then jump on the train and head back uptown.

Stay tuned for more updates in our Day in the Life at Kik series!
