We have an excellent opportunity to move your career forward, we are seeking a Commercial Underwriting Public Sector Segment Leader for our Public Sector business in our Programs and Portfolio solutions team located in downtown Toronto. . This role will start off as work from home, gradually you will be required to work in the downtown office location (First Canadian Place).
You will be accountable for technical and professional expertise in guiding underwriting performance, development and delivering class and segment underwriting strategy, as well as training/guidance to achieve excellence relating to an $85 million national multi-line portfolio.
You are considered Aviva’s technical expert in management and underwriting of Public Sector business with key national and regional brokers.
As the Profit and Loss owner, you will be responsible for a range of related business issues and projects requiring in-depth investigation and judgment to resolve issues and manage to consistent profitability. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work closely with and support other senior executives in the development and implementation of creative and strategic ideas.
Promote marketing and growth including new business within delegated programs and/or portfolios and new program opportunities while monitoring market trends.
Maintain strong broker relationships and involve the team including the creation of proposals and presenting the same.
Primary accountability for setting and executing Aviva Canada's Public Sector strategy. A solid understanding of the dynamics of the insurance marketplace and the ability to use this knowledge to enhance relationships with brokers to known and anticipated trends.
Primary accountability for Public Sector P&L. Capable of dissecting and managing data at a cellular level to optimize risk selection, market segmentation and competitive position. Establish and execute plans for completion of business objectives/plans including pricing, loss ratio, rate changes and new business targets.
Oversee underwriting and processing functions, deep diving as required, to ensure internal underwriting quality and service standards and those to brokers are maintained. Versatility in thought process and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to identify key levers and priorities for large amounts of information.
Recruitment, development, support and training of staff.
Maintain strong broker relationships through marketing visitations, stewardship meetings and program meetings. Promptly resolve conflicts and issues.
Oversight of underwriting decisions, program results and audit plans/discoveries including rectification for head office.
Provide leadership direction including underwriting referrals that require corporate approval as well as recommending authorization on manuscript wordings.
Review, create and update efficiency procedures to optimize cost and expenses.
Actively engage in significant GCS strategic initiatives by providing the Public Sector perspective and subject matter expert advice.
Recruit, develop and retain a first-class team of professionals in order to achieve target performance and growth objectives.
Generate energy in others and to inspire teams to achieve business goals.
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:
University degree or college diploma
FCIP, FCAS, CIP, FCIP, CRM or equivalent designation is required.
10-15 years of relevant P&C experience, including 5+ years of experience in commercial underwriting and product development and a minimum of 5 years supervisor experience.
Demonstrated track record of success in leading a commercial lines business in a well-regarded insurance company. Preference given to candidates with prior public entity experience.
Level of experience commensurate working with National brokers and large Regional’s.
Industry underwriting expert with expertise in at least three relevant product lines in a regulatory environment.
Ability to understand and interpret contract wordings.
Demonstrate interactive communication skill by building constructive and effective relationships internally and externally.
Ability to manage and direct others.
High awareness of internal department and Aviva-wide policies, procedures and guidelines.
Computer literacy with standard office software and gain knowledge of Aviva systems.
Capability to create and present internal/external formal presentations.
Ability to analyse manuscript wordings
