The Opportunity:
The Data Architect is a key member of the Data Management team, responsible for the Enterprise Data Warehouse, Data Lake, and related data processing. In this role, you will act as an advocate of data modeling methodologies and data processing best practices within the organization. You will enhance the company’s use of data as a strategic enabler of corporate goals and objectives by designing, developing, and implementing data models for enterprise-level applications and systems.
In this role, you’ll:
- Develop a deep understanding of Ritchie Bros. current data platform, related solutions and applications, internal and external data sources, data flows and integrations
- Oversee the mapping of data sources, data movement, interfaces, and analytics, with the goal of ensuring data quality
- Collaborate with project managers and business unit leaders for projects involving enterprise data
- Document the data architecture and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture
- Work closely with Product Owners and business representatives to understand business needs with a goal of transforming these needs into a data architecture and design
- Collaborate with enterprise and solution architects, other data architects, ETL developers & engineers, data scientists and analysts to lead identification and definition of required data structures, models, formats, metadata
- Establish methods and procedures for tracking data quality, completeness, redundancy, and improvement
- Participate in work planning and estimation.
Here’s what you bring:
- College diploma or university degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or equivalent
- 10 years IT experience, with at least 5 years in a data architect role
- Hands-on experience with data architecting, data engineering, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis.
- Experience in performing complex data analysis, consulting and providing recommendations
- Experience with business requirements analysis, entity relationship planning, database design, reporting structures, and so on
- Experience with relational databases, analytical models, and data lakes
- Experience working with structured, semi-structured and unstructured data sets
- Experience working with modern data warehouses (AWS Redshift, Azure Synapse Analytics, Google BigQuery, Snowflake)
- Experience with data streaming technologies (Kafka, StreamSets, Kinesis, etc.), stream processing, and event driven architectures
- Working knowledge of SQL
- Excellent understanding of dimensional modeling, star schemas, and associated Kimball methodology
- Ability to accurately analyze information, problem-solve, and make sound decisions
- Ability to prepare specifications and reports, deliver oral presentations, and explain complex technical concepts in simple terms
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Experience working with an Agile development team
- Highly self motivated and directed with a willingness to take initiative and accountability for achieving results
- A proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
- A strong work ethic without sacrificing your sense of humour or your ability to have fun on the job.

- Occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
