Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety & Environment, the Occupational Health Advisor - Biosafety Officer is responsible for leading monitoring and consultation for the MacEwan University Institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity programs, University Health and Hygiene Programs and the Hazardous Management Program. This position also reviews and maintains legislatively required courses, such as WHMIS, Biosafety Containment Level II and General Laboratory Safety Awareness.
The Occupational Health Advisor - Biosafety Officer provides oversight for the management of all biological materials and chemical inventories including but not limited to; review of biohazard permits and procedures, inventory control, emergency spill response, risk assessments and inspections, incident investigations, and training for academic, research and service activities involving biological matters.
The Occupational Health Advisor - Biosafety Officer is responsible for representing Health, Safety and Environment on the MacEwan University Biosafety Committee, as well as supporting the Enhanced Operational Response Team in to monitoring and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Skills
The Occupational Health Advisor - Biosafety Officer requires excellent communication and problem-solving skills with a customer service focus, exceptional facilitation skills, and demonstrated success in program development and implementation.
Qualifications
•An undergraduate degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, occupational health nursing or related field
•A minimum of 5-7 years of experience with biosafety and chemical safety programs, experience with microbiology and in laboratory settings, and familiarity with occupational health and safety legislation
•Familiarity with work-place ergonomics
•Experience delivering biosafety training and other health and safety courses
•Direct experience in a post-secondary or related public sector environment is preferred.
